Prompt Engineering (சரியாக கட்டளையிடுதல் / Art of Asking)

Let's give instructions to the T. Nagar Tailor! (டி.நகர் டெய்லர்ட்ட அளவு கொடுப்போமா!)

Technical Meaning: தூண்டல் பொறியியல் (Thoondal Poriyiyal) - The art of structuring text inputs in a highly specific way to get the exact desired output from an AI.

The Core Idea

An LLM is incredibly smart, but it cannot read your mind. Prompt Engineering is the skill of writing precise, clear, and context-heavy instructions. Instead of just asking the AI to "write an email," a good prompt engineer provides the persona, the tone, the constraints, and the exact format the output should be in.

The Origin Story

When ChatGPT first launched, many people complained, "It writes like a robot" or "It didn't give me what I wanted." But power users realized that the AI's output was simply a mirror of the input. A lazy prompt yields a lazy answer. Prompt engineering quickly evolved into a highly-paid discipline, establishing frameworks like defining Roles, Context, Tasks, and Output Formats.

The Tamil Analogy

Tailor Prompt

Imagine going to a busy Tailor in T. Nagar (டி.நகர் டெய்லர்) to stitch a shirt.

  • A Bad Prompt: You drop the cloth on the table and say, "Stitch a shirt for me." The tailor might make a tight-fitting party shirt, but you actually wanted a loose formal shirt. You get angry, but it's your fault for giving bad instructions!
  • A Master Prompt: You give exact specifications: "I need a formal full-sleeve shirt for an office meeting. The collar must be stiff, keep the fit slightly loose around the stomach, use white buttons, and I need it delivered by Thursday."

The tailor (the AI) has the skills to make both. It purely depends on how perfectly you engineer your instructions!

Try It Yourself

Prompt Engineering

The AI is like a tailor. You get exactly what you ask for. Be specific!
